Non-Exempt

If your math status is Non-Exempt according to your EAP Student Report you do not yet have sufficiently strong math skills to succeed in many required college courses. If you are accepted for admission to the CSU, you must take the ELM exam.
Your score on the ELM exam will determine if you meet the ELM requirement or if you will be required to take remedial math before you can take certain courses that count toward your degree.

Prepare for and Take the ELM Exam

  • Take a math course during your senior year to sharpen your math skills.
  • At the end of January, access the online test prep tools and begin preparing for the exam.
  • Prepare seriously. The exam is your last chance to avoid having to enroll in remedial math courses.
  • Consult the ELM Exam Testing Schedule popup window icon and sign up to take the exam once you receive an offer of admission from a CSU campus.
  • Most CSU campuses will not allow you to sign up for orientation or register for classes if you haven’t taken the ELM exam.

If You Pass the ELM Exam

  • Congratulations! You have met the ELM requirement and are now ready to enroll in most for-credit math freshman math courses at the CSU.
  • Your score will be reported automatically to the campus that you will be attending.

If You Don’t Pass the ELM Exam

  • Contact the academic advising center at the campus you will be attending to find out what course of action they recommend for you.
  • Some campuses offer ELM equivalent courses or ELM study workshops in the summer. Contact the CSU campus that you plan to attend to see if they have a program in place that meets your needs.

Warning for not meeting the EPT requirement

Warning: Failure to Meet the ELM Requirement Costs Time and Money

  • You cannot enroll in many required CSU college classes until you meet the requirement.
  • You must spend time taking remedial math classes during your freshman year until you meet the requirement.
  • You will graduate later because you get no degree credit for these classes.
  • You may have to pay additional charges for these classes.
  • If you do not earn a C or better in the remedial classes, you will have to leave the university.
