Importance of Reading

Although high school students need to be exposed to the important literary genres, they should also be introduced to the types of reading to which they will be predominantly exposed in college.

  1. Many students come into college without successful reading strategies and misunderstand the flexibility they need for the demands of college reading.
  2. Helping students learn to read difficult texts demands a great deal of attention from teachers, but it’s very worthwhile because then students will become better at reading any text.
  3. Often students misunderstand the reading process, so they fail to adjust their reading strategies for different purposes. In addition, they have difficulty understanding the structure of argument and do not understand rhetorical context. Often, their vocabulary is inadequate and tracking complex syntax frustrates them.
