eLearning Student Guide for Using ALEKS

The goal of the eLearning option is to provide a flexible alternative to students who are unable to participate in a full year of classroom instruction.

Students who have a "Conditionally Exempt" EAP status may satisfy their Senior Year Math Experience by completing an eLearning option using the ALEKS ELM Tutor available through this web site. Students pursuing this option must be mentored by a teacher with a special subjects credential in mathematics at their local high school (see steps 2 & 3 below).

The student must complete all of the steps below:

  1. Verify that your status is Conditionally Exempt, and save the Award Letter for submission to your college registrar.
  2. Ask a high school teacher who holds a single subject credentail in mathematics to mentor and tutor you weekly. This teacher mentor must agree to proctor four ALEKS exams, including the first assessment and the last assessment. ALEKS assessments will occur automatically at the beginning of each month. Other ALEKS assessment results must be printed for the mentor. ( Mentor Certification Form, Word)
  3. Make sure your teacher mentor agrees to help you before starting your work. Set up a regular weekly appointment. Agree on a common time and place to proctor the four ALEKS online assessments. ( Weekly Mtg Verification Form, Word)
  4. Buy an ALEKS license through this website and begin taking the ALEKS assessment. At the end of the assessment, continue on with the ALEKS Tutor.
  5. Continue the ALEKS tutoring online and weekly meetings with your teacher mentor until one of the following takes place:
    • You master 100% of the material as determined by a proctored ALEKS assessment. OR
    • You have mastered at least 85% of the ALEKS material and have logged at least 100 hours on ALEKS.
  6. Have your Teacher mentor sign off on your successful completion of ALEKS.
  7. Clear your CSU ELM Requirement by submitting the following items to your CSU campus registrar.
    • Completed student-teacher contract (Mentor Certification form)
    • Log of weekly meetings (Weekly Meeting Verification form)
    • ALEKS assessment history (printed from ALEKS)
    • Your EAP Award Letter declaring your EAP Math Status as Conditionally Exempt
