Standard Not Met: Not Demonstrating Readiness for CSU or Participating CCC College-Level English Courses

If your EAP English status is “Standard Not Met: Not  Demonstrating Readiness for CSU or participating CCC college-level English courses” you do not have sufficiently strong skills to succeed in many required college courses. If you are accepted for admission to the CSU and have not met the EPT requirement, you must take the EPT exam. The score on the ELM exam will determine if you have met the EPT requirement or if you are required to participate in the CSU’s Early Start Program.

Prepare For and Take the EPT Exam (copy)

  • Access the online Exam Prep tools and begin preparing for the exam immediately.
  • Prepare seriously. The exam is your last chance to avoid having to enroll in remedial English courses.
  • Consult the EPT Testing Schedule popup window icon and sign up to take the exam.
  • Be sure to sign up to take the exam in early spring. Most CSU campuses will not allow you to sign up for orientation or register for classes if you haven’t taken the EPT exam.

If You Pass the EPT Exam (copy)

  • If you pass the EPT exam, then you automatically meet the EPT requirement and are ready to enroll in for-credit English courses at the CSU.
  • Your score will be reported automatically to the campus that you will be attending.

If You Do Not Pass the ELM Exam

You will need to participate in the Early Start Program during the summer before the start of your freshman year. Your campus will contact you about how to sign up for the CSU’s Early Start Program. Important: If you do not participate in the Early Start Program, you may not be able to sign up for orientation or register for classes.

Warning for not meeting the EPT requirement

Warning: Failure to Meet the EPT Requirement Costs Time and Money

  • You cannot enroll in for-credit CSU college English classes until you meet the requirement.
  • You must spend time taking remedial English classes during your freshman year until you meet the requirement.
  • You will graduate later because you get no degree credit for remedial English classes.
  • You may have to pay additional charges for the remedial classes.
  • If you do not pass the remedial classes by the end of your first year, you may be disenrolled from the university.
