Not Yet Demonstrating Readiness for CSU or Participating CCC College-Level English Courses

Students with an EAP English status of "Not yet demonstrating readiness for CSU or participating CCC college-level English courses" do not yet have sufficiently strong English skills to succeed in many required college courses. If these students are accepted for admission to the CSU, they must take the EPT test.

Students’ scores on the EPT test determine if they meet the EPT requirement or if they will be required to take remedial English before enrolling in certain courses that count toward their degree.

Helping Students Prepare for the CSU

Students with an EAP status of "Not yet demonstrating readiness for CSU or participating CCC college-level English courses" should be encouraged to prepare for and take the EPT. The following tips provide specific recommendations for helping students get ready for the exam:

  • Inform students of the availability of the online Exam Prep tools to help them prepare for the exam.
  • Encourage students to prepare seriously. The exam is their last chance to avoid having to enroll in remedial English courses.
  • Remind students to consult the EPT Testing Schedule popup window icon and sign up to take the exam once they receive an offer of admission from a CSU campus.
  • Inform students that most CSU campuses will not allow them to sign up for orientation or register for classes if they haven’t taken the EPT.

If a Student Does Not Pass the EPT Exam

  • Students who do not pass the EPT Exam will need to participate in an Early Start Program during the summer before arriving at a CSU. Upon admission, students who need to complete the Early Start requirement will receive information about how to sign up for a program that meets their needs.
