CSU Early Assessment Program

The Early Assessment Program is a test that gives students an “early signal” to see if they are ready for college-level English and mathematics at the end of their junior year of high school. Students are encouraged to take this test in the 11th grade. If the test shows that students are ready for college-level English and mathematics at the end of the junior year, students will not be required to take placements tests upon entering the CSU. If the test results show they are not ready, students entering their senior year are encouraged to use the CSU's online training tools, as well as work with their teachers and counselors to improve their proficiency in English and mathematics. In addition, the CSU has developed a comprehensive professional development program for teachers wishing to learn more about how to improve their student's readiness levels across the curriculum. Goal

The goal of the EAP program is to have California high school graduates enter the CSU fully prepared to begin college-level study.

The Challenge

More than 60 percent of the nearly 40,000 first-time freshmen admitted to the CSU require remedial education in English, mathematics or both. These 25,000 freshmen all have taken the required college preparatory curriculum and earned at least a B grade point average in high school. The cost in time and money to these students and to the state is substantial. Moreover, these students are confused by seemingly having done the right things in high school only to find out after admission to the CSU that they need further preparation.
